The Harvard Line, the less celebrated of Chicago & North Western’s three main lines heading out of Chicago is one of the oldest railroads in the northern part of Illinois. Incorporated in 1852 as the Illinois & Wisconsin, it was quickly taken over by William Butler Ogden and his associates, who envisioned a railroad running northwest from Chicago to the Twin Cities and north to Lake Superior. Completed to both Harvard and Jamestown in 1856 as the Chicago St. Paul & Fond du Lac and merged into the Chicago & North Western in June 1859. The Harvard Line has served Northwest suburbs and southern Wisconsin for 167 years. The original railroad, including the “Low Line” from Kinzie Street to Carpenter Street was still in service in 2023.
