The Electric Interurban Railways in America. By George W. Hilton and John F. Due
Published by Stanford University Press. Copyright 1960 by the Board of Trustees of the Leland Standford Junior University.
Part one of this book is a general history of the construction and technology of the industry. Part two includes histories of more than 300 electric interurban companies in the U.S. Built with the idea of attacting short-distance passenger traffic and light freight, the interurbans were constructed primarily in the early 1900s. The rise of the automobile and motor transport caused the industry to decline after World War I. The depression almost completely destroyed the industry by the middle 1930s.
