This book traces the cronologicial development of the 4-8-4 beginning with the Northern Pacific Class A. Thirty four railroad chapters follow concluding with Western J-1 Potomacs, the last railroad to receive 4-8-4s in 1947. Northers were continued to be built through 1950 when Norfolk and Western received their final 3 locomotives.
