The Piedmont & Northern was a project of James Buchanan “Buck” Duke, founder of such diverse institutions as the Duke Power Company, The American Tabacco Company, and Duck University. This line was develped between 1910 and 1916. Duke’s electric line consisted of two physically isolated divisions totaling 128 route miles in length. The southern, and longer line, extended 89 miles from Greenwood to Spartanburg, South Carolina, together with a 12-mile branch from Belton to Anderson. The northern line extended 24 miles from Charlotte to Gastonia in North Carolina, with a 3-mile branch to Belton.
