The Nickel Plate Road – The History of the Great Railroad by Taylor Hampton
Copyright 1947. Published by The World Publishing Company
The New York, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad,NYC&St.L, was a railroad that operated in the mid-central United States. Commonly referred to as the “Nickel Plate Road”, the railroad served parts of the states of New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri. Nickel Plate is a good example of the highly competitive nature of the railroad industry, and especially the fate of midwestern railroads who attempted to compete with Eastern giants. Port railroads-New York Central, Pennsylvania, and Baltimore & Ohio-dominated the industry, and were powerful competitors as they spread their networks westward-exchanging traffic with western roads usually at Chicago or St. Louis.
